Innovative Philanthropy
Are you a venture capitalist with knowledge and skill in investing in start-up companies?
Are you an entrepreneur who has been successful in turning investors’ funds into a new enterprise in science or information technology?
Would you like to share your expertise in support of an eminent, world-class university and receive a substantial tax benefit at the same time?
UCLA’s Venture Capital Fund may be the perfect way for you to combine your professional skills with your philanthropic goals. Formed in 2000, the Fund offers a unique and dynamic way for UCLA supporters to join a community of forward-thinking friends, parents, and alumni in the Silicon Valley who are using their venture capital expertise to increase crucial funding for the College of Letters and Science and the Athletics Department.
Currently, the Fund is invested in 22 private, venture-backed companies in information technology and life science. Most Fund participants make pledges of stock in start-up companies, transferring the stock to UCLA when the companies go public. When the liquidity event occurs, everyone benefits: the donor receives a substantial charitable tax deduction; and UCLA benefits from selling the shares at their new, higher value.
