Event Recap | October 2015

On October 12th, the UCLA VC FUND closed out Bruin Innovation Week 2015 with the largest entrepreneurial event on campus to date. #UBERatUCLA provided approximately 2,000 students, faculty, and alumni an opportunity to participate in a day-long series of sold out events featuring exclusive company-building insights from top CEO and fellow Bruin, Travis Kalanick and the Uber team.

We kicked off the program with the Uber Jampad Mentoring Session, which invited five student- and young alumni-led startups to join in one of Travis' legendary 1:1 mentoring sessions, while 50 other startups listened in. You can find out more about the emerging Bruin companies selected for this event by visiting their webhomes, linked below:

After the Jampad, all students were welcome to attend the Uber Student Expo on the Royce Hall Terrace. This evening event connected Bruins with entrepreneurial groups on campus as well as Uber recruiters. We were  also fortunate to stave off the Fall quarter heat wave with refreshments from Beverly Hills-based and Bruin-owned, Ice Cream Lab.

Later in the evening, Travis was honored for his entrepreneurial leadership in the company of his girlfriend, violinist Gabi Holzwarth, and his parents, as well as Chancellor Gene Block (pictured with Travis below) and fellow members at the UCLA VC Fund Annual Dinner, which took place at Fowler Hall. This members-only event is a great way for UCLA alumni and friends to exchange business ideas and make valuable connections through our private social mixers held yearly throughout the state of California.

"The space between perception and reality is the innovation playground."
– Travis Kalanick
The program culminated in front of a sold out crowd at Royce Hall, where Travis was awarded the UCLA VC Fund Entrepreneurial Achievement Award by executive chair, Michael Silton. Following the award, Travis sat down with another accomplished Bruin, Susan Feldman (Founder and Chief Merchandising Officer, One Kings Lane) to discuss all things UCLA and entrepreneurship.

Our mission is to inspire entrepreneurship by bringing experienced mentors and speakers to the UCLA campus; taking student and alumni companies out into the world; and investing in the best along the way. We use our proceeds to support entrepreneurship efforts on campus and in the community. Stay tuned for our 2016 event lineup by joining our mailing list and becoming a member!

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Travis and Uber for coming to UCLA, and to the incredible group of VC Fund volunteers and UCLA staff who helped make this special event happen.

Special thanks to our cosponsors, Cooley, LLC and Silicon Valley Bank.
